Combat Skills

While most combatants join a Martial School, it is possible, if much harder, to self-train fighting skills. The following skills may be purchased without being a member of a Martial School. Note that purchasing these outside of a Martial school does not increase your number of attacks and defenses useable per combat. These abilities reset outside of combat with 10 minutes of rest, as per Martial School abilities.

Knockout - 5 CCP or EXP per level (Max = 5)
Attacks – 10 CCP or EXP per level
Defenses - 10 CCP or EXP per level

Knockout

The only non-specific Melee skill that is not covered under Combat Skills or Martial Schools is Knockout. This ability may be purchased a total of five times, just as Skills, and works the same as Martial Skill, in that it resets after 10 minutes of rest. It is separate from both Skills and Martial Skills, in that it is specifically classified as an attack, but does no damage to the target. Anyone can learn to use a the Knockout skill, however it takes a great deal of "practice" in play to be able to do it safely without causing damage to one's target.

To use Knockout, you must be standing directly behind your target and tap them on the upper back, between the shoulder blades, with the pommel of your weapon. Any weapon with a standard padded pommel can be used to deliver a Knockout blow. Knockout can be countered with the Enhanced Sense of Hearing Advantage or with a Shield effect, but it cannot be Parried or Dodged. If the target is wearing an approved helmet or coif, he or she may call Immune to a Knockout blow. You may not Knockout someone whom you have just attacked, you must remain neutral as you move around behind your target before landing your strike. If you are hit with an attack from behind immediately followed by a Knockout blow, you may call Immune to the Knockout blow.

A character that is successfully hit with a Knockout blow is rendered unconscious for 10 minutes. They may not be shaken awake as with a Sleep effect, however any Revive effect (such as Awaken or Smelling Salts potions) will return them to full consciousness.

Attacks

Attacks are called as Vital Strikes, and are purchased in groups of 5 per level. What this means is after you purchase your fifth Vital Strike +1, your next purchase of Attack replaces one of your Vital Strike +1s with a Vital Strike +2. After four more purchases, all of your Vital Strikes are +2, and you may begin buying Vital Strike +3. This progression continues as follows:

Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5
Vital Strike +1 Vital Strike +2 Vital Strike +3 Mortal Blow Deathstrike

This is the same progression that Vital Strikes take within Martial Schools, but rather than buying additional strikes, their existing strikes upgrade automatically when they Initiate into their next level.

The cost to get all 5 Deathstrikes without being in a martial school is: 250 (10 points per skill * 5 skills per level * 5 levels)

Unlike a Martial School, you may not advance to level 2 by purchasing 3 level 1 Attacks, you must first have the full set of 5. However, you are not required to buy any Defenses at all to level your out of school Attacks. There are also no level Initiation costs, as you are simply practicing and making yourself better.

Defenses

Defenses outside of Martial Schools also follow along a progression, in the same manner as Attacks. If a lower tier Defense is preferable in a situation to you (i.e. you have level 3 but you'd rather Parry than Dodge), you may "call down" if you choose. You are still limited to 5 Defense calls per combat. This progression is as follows:

Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5
Parry Evade Dodge Deflect Counterstrike

Martial Schools do NOT progress in this fashion, but rather they only recieve those abilities available in their school, which they must pick how to use.

The cost to get all 5 Counterstrikes without being in a martial school is: 250 (10 points per skill * 5 skills per level * 5 levels)

Unlike a Martial School, you may not advance to level 2 by purchasing 3 level 1 Defenses, you must first have the full set of 5. However, you are not required to buy any Attacks at all to level your out of school Defenses. There are also no level Initiation costs, as you are simply practicing and making yourself better.
